How do we make racial justice work sustainable?

As the nation is uplifting conversations about inequities in America, it's clear that racial injustice is built into policing and our justice system. However, we also see it in other parts of our society. In these moments of reckoning, it's important that we realize the ways that we can make a positive impact in our respective industries.

One way of thinking about longterm sustainability when it comes addressing these issues is to consider what we can do within our spheres of influence. For those of us in tech, studies continue to show the ways that tech reflects and often amplifies inequities in race, gender, socioeconomic status and more. It's important that we evaluate these impacts as technology becomes more and more integrated into all of our lives, including areas like criminal justice, healthcare, education, banking and more.

To make this work sustainable and impactful, we have to put together a game plan to understand the impact of injustice in our own sectors. We have more of a say in our circles of influence, and we make ongoing impacts in our work everyday.

At Hack the Gap, we see technology as one of the many tools that we have to address injustices and increase access and opportunities. We see value in amplifying people's voices, ideas, and products that serve diverse populations. We'll continue to share out thoughts, insights, and think-pieces on parts of technology to encourage folks to think longterm about the impacts we can make in tech, in addition to other sectors and industries.
